Can I ask what pressure you were running in this tire when it blew??

And did it actually 'blow' instantly, or did the pothole hit just split the sidewall a bit &/or damage it enough to start it leaking air &/or fail later??

Been riding for 62 years now, the last 12 on spyders. I used to ride with a vented exterior gear which was completely mesh so wind would go through in all areas. This was great for driving through 100 degree temperatures in Texas and when it rained I got wet I dried when the rain stopped. In the 10 degree weather in Canada I just put a liner inside and if colder a heated vest. One thing I did ensure was that the bike had the equipment that gave me the best protection for rain well driving. Proper sized windscreen, deflectors for hands and feet. I could drive in the rain and not get any part of me wet until I had to stop. I did carry a shell that was rain proof but hardly used it.

Now I wear a shell that is rain proof, but I can vent it, not full venting that I was used to but as you get older it is important to stay as dry as you can. I do carry rain pants and an extra pair of waterproof footwear.
